Collector reviews water situation

Special Correspondent

Water release for irrigation may be difficult in view of delay in monsoon, he says

VIJAYAWADA: Krishna district Collector Peeyush Kumar said on Thursday that he reviewed the irrigation and drinking water situation in the district with officials concerned and asked them to attend to drinking water needs of people on a war-footing.

Mr. Kumar said at a press conference here that the release of water for irrigation could prove to be difficult in view of the delay in monsoon and low water levels in the reservoirs.

Water crisis

He admitted that the 2,000 cusecs of water released for the drinking water purposes through Bandar Canal was insufficient, as areas such as Gudivada, Kaikaluru and Avanigadda were already suffering from shortage of water for drinking purposes.

The Collector said he took up the issue of posting a Superintending Engineer here with the higher officials of Irrigation Department.

Collectors’ meet

The drinking water crisis and release of water for irrigation would be discussed even before the two-day meeting of Collectors in Hyderabad on Friday and Saturday, while several other issues of importance to Krishna district would be taken up in the two-day meeting.

Hospital issue

Mr. Kumar assured to raise the issue of super-speciality hospital in the Collectors’ meeting, saying every effort would be made to get the hospital located in the city.

On his priorities, the new Collector said that speeding up of pending projects and works and improvement of the delivery mechanism would be accorded top priority.

He would take stock of the state of affairs in the district administration for a month and make changes, if necessary.

The Collector said in reply to a question that the modalities for the weeding out of bogus ration cards were expected to be finalised after the Collectors’ meeting.
