dated June 25, 1959: Rubens painting sold

A Rubens painting, “The Adoration of the Magi”, was sold in London on June 24 for the world record price of £275,000. The painting was part of a collection from the estate of the late Duke of Westminster. The 18 lots sold for the Duke made £439,210. Other paintings sold boosted the overall figure to £740,480. The sale was held at Sotheby’s Auction Rooms where the previous world record price was paid last October for Cezanne’s painting.
