Yeddyurappa plans Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bangalore

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Expressing desire to benefit from the skill reservoir of overseas Indians, Kannadigas in particular, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Tuesday said the State Government proposes to hold Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bangalore.

Mr. Yeddyurappa, who chaired the second meeting of the NRI Forum established by the Government about a year ago, said the cell has to bear the responsibility of holding the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in the city.

A Canada-based company and a NRI have come forwarded to establish an Advance Technology and Management Institute in the State. A global investors’ meeting would be organised at the end of 2009 and the Government expected Rs. 3 lakh crore investment from it, he said.

Delegation

The Government delegations would visit the U.S., the U.K., China, Japan, the U.A.E., Bahrain, and other countries in the coming days to discuss various plans with the NRIs.

A data bank of 701 NRIs had been created so far. B.R. Shetty of Abu Dhabi and the royal family there have shown keen interest to invest in hotels, housing complexes, infrastructure, energy, dinking water supply in urban areas, urban development and waste management sectors in the State, Mr. Yeddyurappa said.

He said the Government would seriously look into the case of Joseph Chacko, who was arrested on the charge of cheating NRIs.

Ganesh Karnik, MLC, and Deputy Chairman of the NRI Forum, said he would tour the U.A.E. to explain to investors the potential for investment in the State. An officer in each department would be designated as nodal officer for clearing investment proposals of NRIs. NRIs have made several demands, including allotment of seats for their children in professional courses, he said.

The cell has decided to despatch a circular to headmasters of all schools in the State to obtain information about NRIs to create the data bank.

Officials of different departments attended the meeting.
