Getting ready: Students of the Bangalore School of Speech and Drama at a practice session of ‘A Grimm Night for Hans Christian Andersen’. BANGALORE: In its latest venture, the Bangalore School of Speech and Drama will bring on stage an interesting world of fairy tales, but with a twist. On Friday and Saturday, you can watch “A Grimm Night for Hans Christian Andersen” which tells the story of a “hilarious battle” between the classic storytellers, the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. “Both the storytellers fight for the copyright of stories that are uncannily similar,” says Zulfia Shaikh, director, Bangalore School of Speech and Drama. She said that the play was a blend of music, humour and witty dialogues, and was suited for all ages.” This is the school’s eighth production. Dr. Shaikh said that while this year’s production had music and dance, the “essence of the play is in the drama and poignancy on which it rests.” The school has previously presented “Fantastic Mr. Fox” written by Roald Dahl, “Time Upon a Once” written by Dr. Shaikh, “This Is Where We Came In” by Sir Alan Ayckbourne, “Peter Pan” by J. M. Barrie, “Card Country” by Rabindranath Tagore. Last year, they staged the Chinese folktale version of “Aladdin”. The school is an accredited institution which trains children in communication, speech and drama, and follows a syllabus charted by the Trinity College, London. The school has trained over 400 students. Dr. Shaikh said that her interest in theatre made her enrol in Trinity College. “Once I returned to the city, I started the school.” “A Grimm Night for Hans Christian Andersen” will be staged at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall at 7 p.m. For tickets, call 9845071197, 9886360004, or 25720735.
