Sweet shops, bakeries raided

Staff Reporter

Food samples collected to be sent to Hyderabad for analysis

The food inspection drive initiated at PNBS last Wednesday

VIJAYAWADA: Continuing their drive to inspect various restaurants, eateries and the like, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials on Monday inspected sweet and confectionary shops to ensure that there were no cases of adulteration in food items.

Officials said that the kitchens they inspected were found to be in unhygienic condition in some sweet shops. Upon noticing that the bakeries and sweet shops, in some places, were causing inconvenience to neighbours, the officials gave them some suggestions, and asked them to avoid causing inconvenience to others. The officials served notices on the managements that were violating the norms.

As many as nine teams cracked down on bakeries and sweet shops located across the city at a time. The officials inspected raw materials like khova, sugar, milk and other ingredients that are widely used in preparing sweets and bakery products, as well as the final products.

Food inspectors collected about nine samples from some of the sweet shops and bakeries.

The samples included boondi, badusha, bread and biscuits, which were collected to test the quality of colours and the silver foils used in preparing the sweets. The samples would be sent to Hyderabad for analysis.

“We are targeting not just small shops but the big ones too,” Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) M. Satyanarayana Raju said, adding: “the inspection is aimed at detecting the quality of the sweets and other food items. Stringent action would be taken against the offenders.”

The VMC officials began its food inspection drive at Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) last Wednesday. In the second leg of inspections from last Thursday, they raided all star and big hotels. At PNBS they collected as many as 13 samples, as they grew suspicious of the quality of the food products like biscuits, gulab jam, dry fruits, halwa, boondi, khova, and ice cream. Similarly, they picked up samples from star and big hotels.

Dr. Raju and AMOH R. Madhava Rao were present.
