CHENNAI: About 40 huts were damaged in a fire that broke out at Kalyanapuram in Vyasarpadi here on Monday. Two fire-fighters were injured when they were engaged in extinguishing the flames.

According to police sources, the fire occurred around noon when a funeral procession passed that way. It is suspected that the crackers burst during the procession might have resulted in the fire.

Fire tenders and water lorries from different places were moved in. Leading fire-fighter Damodaran (40) and his colleague Bhanu (38) suffered injuries.

The fire was put off by around 3 p.m., the sources added.

After the incident, Mayor M.Subramanian visited the affected families and supervised the relief measures initiated by Chennai Corporation.

According to a press release, the civic body made arrangements to provide food to the people affected by the fire. High-mast lamps have been installed in the locality for better lighting. Medical intervention and water supply for the affected people have been provided.

The Department of Revenue has started the assessment of damage to the property. The Mayor asked the officials to provide relief to the affected people at the earliest.
