Five dacoits held at gun-point in Keelnallathur

Two cars, weapons, motorcycle and jewellery recovered from them



The suspects who were arrested by the police in Keelnallathur in Tiruvallur district.

CHENNAI: A gang of five dacoits was nabbed at gun-point by the Tiruvallur police in Keelnallathur early on Monday. Two cars, including a luxury vehicle, weapons and some gold jewellery were recovered from the suspects.

According to police sources, the accused persons who came in a car barged into a restaurant on Chennai-Tiruvallur National Highway on June 19 and robbed the cashier at knife-point. Early next day, they intercepted a car proceeding to the Chennai airport from Rajampeta. The accused robbed the driver and bundled him out of the car. A little later, two passengers Iqbal and Venkatiah were also forced to get down.

The dacoits then robbed an autorickshaw driver at the Kadambathur railway station area after he refused to transport them free of cost to New Venmanampudur. When some passers-by tried to intervene, the accused brandished deadly weapons and threatened to kill them.

Special team

After these cases were reported at the respective police stations, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Kancheepuram) G. Durairaj instructed the Superintendent of Police (Tiruvallur) M.C. Sarangan to form a special team to probe the complaints. Following specific inputs, the team raided a hideout of the gang at Keelanallathur near Poondi around 4 a.m. on Monday.

On seeing the police, the accused who were sleeping in an abandoned building tried to escape. However, armed police personnel surrounded them.

On interrogation the accused confessed to having committed the crimes. They were identified as C.Ganesaperumal (24) of Porur, G.Vijay Kumar (24) of Tiruvallur, D. Murasolimaran (21), T.Novah (23) and G.Pandian (21) of Koodapakkam. Two cars, two sovereigns of gold jewellery, a motorcycle and weapons were seized from the dacoits, the sources added.
