CHENNAI: Co-operatives Minister Ko.Si. Mani on Monday told the Assembly that the 30 per cent of the Rs.2000-crore crop loan for the current year would go to farmers who had not made use of the scheme so far. Replying to a debate on the demand for grant for his department, the Minister said priority would also be given to them in mid-term loans for precision farming and minor irrigation. He said the joint liability groups, formed for the purpose of smooth flow of credit, would be increased to 2000 in the current year. Last year 1000 groups were formed. “Experience shows that this scheme has considerably reduced the paper work and facilitated quick sanction and disbursal of crop loans to the marginalised,” he said. As regards distribution of quality seeds for the farmers, he said the cooperative marketing societies would procure pulses, oil seeds, millets and seeds of vegetables to the tune of Rs.15 crore as against Rs.7.30 crore last year. The Minister also announced his department’s decision to launch a bachelor and masters degree in cooperation. “This will be done by the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Union in association with Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore. As a first step, a bachelor degree course – B.Com with diploma in cooperative management – will be launched.” Mr. Mani said election to the cooperatives would be conducted after getting the Supreme Court delivered its verdict on a batch of applications.
