Training: Physical education teachers of government schools undergoing training in yoga during a camp organised by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan on Monday in Puducherry. — PUDUCHERRY: In a bid to improve the quality of education imparted to students, the Directorate of School Education plans to provide in-service training to all government school teachers in the Union Territory this year, Director of School Education S. Sundaravadivelu said, on Monday. Speaking at the inauguration of a six-day training programme, on yoga for development of mental faculties for physical educators, in the presence of Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam, he said the in-service training, which would cover nearly 5,000 teachers, would be conducted at a total cost of Rs.61 lakh. “Through such training, the teaching skills of the teachers will improve, thereby enhancing the learning ability of students. In the first phase, the training in yoga is being provided for teachers in Puducherry region,” Mr. Sundaravadivelu said. The in-service training was one of the schemes aimed at improving the quality of education in the Union Territory, he said, adding that it was not enough if students secured high marks in examinations but their physical and mental health was important. “There should be concentration on sports too,” the director noted. As many as 150 physical education teachers of government schools were participating in the training, which was jointly conducted by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Puducherry Vedapuri Manavalakalai Mandram. After completion of training, the teachers would impart the skills to the school students. With Tamil Nadu holding in place a number of schemes to promote yoga, Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam assured to take similar steps in Puducherry. He noted that though Western countries had universities, schools, research centres and libraries, they looked up at students in India and China due to good upbringing. The Chief Minister said such training programmes for teachers would be beneficial for the students also. Considering the number of suicides in Puducherry, especially among young persons, State Project Director of SSA R. Parthasarathy said suicidal attempts could be removed by addressing the students. Among others, Head of Ulaga Samuthaya Seva Sangam S.K. Mailanandam and Deputy Director (Sports) and Directorate of School Education Fathimaraj, were present.
