PUDUCHERRY: Stressing the need for community participation in mosquito control, M. Bala Soudarssanane, Head of Preventive and Social Medicine Department, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), exhorted school students to clear any collection of water in the vicinity of their houses for source reduction for control of mosquitoes. The JIPMER Urban Health Centre at Kurusukuppam observed the anti-malaria month on June 19, to create awareness among the public about malaria. A number of school students and public attended the programme, according to a release. Dr. Soudarssanane emphasised the importance of community participation in source reduction for control of mosquitoes. He asked the students to clear any collection of water, whether clean or dirty, which was the mainstay of source reduction in mosquito control. Director of Vector Control Research Centre Jambulingam described the various diseases caused by mosquitoes and common breeding sites. He elaborated on malaria control strategies such as early detection, treatment and vector control by environmental management, noted the release. A skit on malaria and vector control measures was presented by the intern-doctors, while anganwadi workers put up an entertainment show on the occasion.
