BJP seeks measures to tackle farm sector crisis

Calls for change in procurement policy of FCI

HYDEBABAD: The State BJP farmers’ wing has appealed to the Centre to initiate measures to tide over the crisis facing the agriculture sector, including a change in the procurement policy of the Food Corporation of India.

P. Sugunakar Rao, president, and C. Shyam Prasad, an expert, in a joint statement suggested that the Centre effect a change in the FCI policy by going in for 50 per cent procurement of paddy and the balance of rice. This would ensure remunerative price to farmers and no damage to rice stocks.

They suggested creation of a permanent fund to ensure minimum support price for farm produce, setting up of a warehousing godown for three or four villages, giving a boost to production of more organic fertilizers through subsidy and agricultural research and encouraging investment of private funds in the farm sector.
