IT curriculum soon for middle schools

Ajai Sreevatsan

CHENNAI: A new scheme aiming to introduce students between Classes VI and X to Information Technology will soon be implemented in government schools across the State.

The initiative seeks to open the world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to students at the middle school-level. The programme aims at teaching computer literacy to students early in their schooling so that they will be better equipped to deal with the changing educational and employment landscape, senior officials in the Department of School Education told The Hindu.

Most of the required hardware has already been provided under Central and State government sponsored schemes. The syllabus and the first primer material, which would be used as textbooks, have been developed and initially Chief Educational Officers in each district would take care of training teachers to effectively carry out the programme.

Headmasters of various district schools have already been provided training based on the syllabus during the summer vacations, officials added.

Over 100 computer teachers have been invited from various districts to undergo training conducted by professionals from Microsoft.
