Karunanidhi refutes Jayalalithaa’s charge on Katchatheevu
Special Correspondent
He recalls the resolution adopted in the Assembly in 1974
CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday refuted All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa’s allegation that he did not object to the Indian government ceding Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka.
In a statement here, the Chief Minister recalled the resolution adopted in the Assembly in 1974 and his letter to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi expressing the State government’s disappointment over the Indian government’s decision.
“But the AIADMK refused to support the resolution and staged a walkout from the House.” He wanted to know why Ms. Jayalalithaa, who vowed to retrieve Katchatheevu in her Independence Day speech in 1991, failed to do anything after that.
“No moral right”
“She has no moral right to question us,” he said and added that Ms. Jayalalithaa herself had admitted that only the Centre could take steps to retrieve Katchatheevu.
