NELLORE: The police on Saturday arrested 13 persons for allegedly raping a woman on the city outskirts a few days ago. Most of the accused were working as autorickshaw drivers and had committed similar offences earlier.

Briefing mediapersons, Superintendent of Police B. Malla Reddy said a few accused who were at the Atmakur bus station on June 13 night forcibly took the victim, aged about 25, in an autorickshaw while she was waiting on the roadside.

Her husband who just walked into the bus station noticed them and followed the autorickshaw in another vehicle. The police mobile vehicle too tried to trace the autorickshaw in which the accused went, but could not find it. The autorickshaw drivers who took the woman to an isolated place called their friends over phone and committed the heinous crime. The next day, the victim lodged a complaint with the Two Town police.

The arrested have been identified as -- R. Subramanyam alias Chinna (auto owner), A. Venkata Ramana, R. Venkatesh, V.Vijay Kumar, P. Hari, Ch. Samuel, S. Chandra Kumar, Ch. Meeralu, K. Srinu, I. Aanoj, C. Madhu and B. Shiva. They recovered the auto rickshaw from the accused.

Directive to police

During interrogation the accused confessed to having committed similar offences earlier, but the incidents went unnoticed as victims did not lodge any complaint.

Instructions have been given to the police to keep a tab on autorickshaw drivers operating during nights and arrange patrolling and police beats at public places, Mr. Malla Reddy said.
