Chamber plea on airport expansion

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: Relentlessly continuing its efforts for the development of Gannavaram airport, the Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry has made a plea to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to direct the officials concerned to hasten the process of land acquisition for facilitating the expansion of the airport.

The latest appeal follows the recent indication given by the Airports Authority of India about its inability to proceed with long-term development of the airport unless the district administration and the State government handed over the land additionally required for the full expansion.

The Chamber, in its June 19 letter, expressed concern that there was inordinate delay in taking up works regarding construction of terminal buildings and other permanent facilities at the airport just because the additional land had not been handed over to the AAI.

Chamber president M. Rajaiah sought immediate action from the State in this regard.
