Staff Correspondent

Belliappa quit BJP to join Congress party recently

Madikeri: C. Belliappa (36), a Congress worker, was murdered allegedly by a group of people at Heggala, near Virajpet town in Kodagu on Thursday night.

Belliappa had quit the Bharatiya Janata Party to join the Congress party recently. Political rivalry is suspected to be the cause of murder.

According to the police, Belliappa was going home in an autorickshaw on Thursday night when he was dragged out of the vehicle by a group of persons who had followed him from Virajpet town in a Maruti van and hacked him.

Belliappa was shifted to the Virajpet hospital with grievous injuries and later to a hospital in Mysore where he died.

Three persons have reportedly surrendered to the police and a few more are absconding.

The former MLC, C.S. Arun Machaiah, has condemned the murder and urged the police to nab the accused and take steps to maintain law and order.
