Implement Hubli-Ankola railway project, say Pralhad Joshi and Shivakumar Udasi

Hubli: Pralhad Joshi, MP from Dharwad North, and representatives of several organisations submitted memoranda with regard to demands connected to rail links to Union Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa on Friday during his first visit to the city after assuming office.

Pralhad Joshi and Shivakumar Udasi, both MPs, wanted Mr. Muniyappa to convene a meeting of the officials concerned of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Ministry of Railways and the State Government to sort out issues with respect to the implementation of the pending Hubli-Ankola railway project.

Mr. Joshi told the Minister that there was inordinate delay in the implementation of the project due to the apathy of the railway authorities and the Union Government officials. The State Government was enthusiastic in pursuing the project, they said. Mr. Muniyappa assured the MPs that requisite steps would be initiated to get the clearance for the project.

Former MP Manjunath Kunnur also placed a list of demands before Mr. Muniyappa. His demands included clearance for Hubli-Ankola railway line; track doubling between Tumkur and Hubli; a direct railway line between Dharwad and Belgaum via Bailhongal; and a direct train to Pune and Mumbai from Hubli.

Bellary region

Members of the Karnataka State Railway Action Committee, led by its convener K.M. Maheshwarswamy, submitted a memorandum seeking better railway facilities for the Bellary region, which generates good revenue for the South Western Railway. Their demands included extension of services of some trains and introduction of new trains.

Train to Ajmer

A delegation of the Anjuman-e-islam led by its president Mohammed Yusuf Savanur wanted the Minister to initiate steps to run a daily train to Ajmer from Hubli for the benefit of the devotees of Hazarat Khwaja Garib Nawaz (Hazrat Moinuddin Chisti) and Dargah Sharif Ajmer in Rajasthan.

In the memorandum submitted to the Minister, Congress councillor Deepak Chinchore demanded that Vasco-Howrah Express and Sampark Kranti should halt at Dharwad and the Dharwad Railway Station should be developed.

Rail Pravasi Samiti president Mahendra Singhi demanded steps for improving passenger amenities in North Karnataka.

Mumbai

The delegation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) led by its president V.P. Lingangaoudar wanted track-doubling work to be taken up between Hubli and Tumkur, creation of Mangalore and Gulbarga railway divisions and a direct train to Mumbai from Hubli.

A delegation of Karnataka Development Forum led by its secretary R.R. Hombal asked for diverting the Rani Chennamma Express from Miraj and extending it to Mumbai instead of Kolhapur.

The Minister assured all delegations that he would look into their demands and initiate steps required.
