MAKING A POINT: National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities Director Neeradha Chandramohan interacts with parents of differently-abled children in Chennai on Saturday.

CHENNAI: Awareness of government schemes and programmes for differently-abled children must be created among government officials and parents, said Director of Fire and Rescue Services R. Natraj on Saturday.

Addressing at a workshop on capacity building and leadership development organised by Parivaar – NFPA and Tamil Nadu State Coordination Committee (TNSCCP) of Parivaar, he said it was a matter of right and not charity for parents to demand their children’s rights.

National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities Director Neeradha Chandramohan said that the institute was ready to extend its services to all districts of the State. “Once parents’ associations let us know of their needs, we will send professionals to train their therapists and parents.”

TNSCCP general secretary Parvathy Viswanath said that in rural areas that had no special schools, community based rehabilitation was the only way out. For this, parents of these children have to come together.

“We are now empowering the parents to take up issues of the children. When the parents come together as associations we teach them about various acts and schemes available for the children.”

She said that Parivaar had been suggesting that parents and siblings be trained so that they need not depend on the experts always. Parents were also being asked to start self-help groups and then group homes for their children so that their future would be secure.
