Corrections and clarifications

The last paragraph in a Kolkata report “Operation to extend beyond Lalgarh” (June 19, 2009) was “Referring to Mr. Adhikary’s ‘provocative speech,’ he [government chief whip Syed Mohammad Masih] said it was unbecoming of a Minister of the Central government to incite violence in this way.” Mr. Adhikary is a Trinamool Congress MP and a reader found the reference to his being a Union Minister confusing. The Staff Reporter clarifies: Though Syed Mohammad Masih did refer to Trinamool Congress MP Subendu Adhikary’s “provocative speech,” his remark that “it was unbecoming of a minister of the Central Government to incite violence in this way” was not in reference to Mr. Adhikary’s speech. It was a general comment by him on the behaviour of Ministers of the Trinamool Congress in the UPA Government who, he alleged, were supporting violence in the State.
