COUNTER TO CHAAT: Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and senior leader Manohar Joshi at a function to launch the party’s own ‘vada pav’ brand in Mumbai on Thursday. Mumbai: Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray inaugurated the party’s own brand of ‘vada-pav,’ ‘Shiv Vada-pav,’ on the 41st anniversary of the party’s foundation day (June 19) at the Shiv Sena Bhavan, the party headquarters. The brand is meant to compete with the north Indian chaat. He said international brands such as McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken sold food items round the clock in many parts of the world. The Shiv Sena’s efforts would be to make sure that one day the ‘Shiv Vada-pav’ brand is on par. The ‘Shiv Vada-pav’ would have a uniform taste everywhere. He said McDonald’s had helped them acquire special equipment that keeps food fresh. Addressing journalists, Mr. Thackeray said: “This is an effort to create employment among the youth and to popularise Maharashtrian food. Earlier, people used to tell me that their stalls were taken away by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). So we have sorted out the issue of licensing with the BMC. Those who become members of the Shiv Sahakar Seva Sahakari Sanstha [the outfit that will employ people at the ‘Shiv Vada-pav’ centres] will not have to worry about that.” On the occasion, 25 ‘Shiv Vada-pav’ stalls will dot the city. There are 700 more applicants on the waiting list and the party aims to go beyond the 1000-mark.
