BHUBANESWAR: For scores of budding painters, sculptors and photographers of the country, here is a reason to rejoice. The alumni association of Balasore College of Art and Craft – known as Kalakshetra – has announced to host an annual country-wide art competition-cum-exhibition.

College principal Nikunja Behari Das, the brain behind the project, told The Hindu that the mission of the event would be to spot out the talents, encourage them and give them an exposure at the national level. “We have instituted 10 awards – four for contemporary art, landscape and portraits; two for graphics and drawings; two for sculptures and two for photography and digital art. All the awards would carry cash awards,” he explained.

Besides the 10 major awards, there would be 25 memorial awards named after 25 famous artists of the State like Bibhuti Kanungo, Sarat Chandra Debo, N. Chandrasekhar Rao, Rabi Narayan Nayak, Muralidhar Tali, Bimbadhar Barma, Asit Mukherjee and Durga Prasad Patnaik.

“By instituting these memorial awards, we intend the make the new generation of artists aware of the pioneers who enriched the world of art,” Das said. The 180-member alumni association has taken all the pains to generate resources for this major art event, he added.

Artists in the age group of 16 to 30 would be eligible to participate in this contest and the last date for receipt of the applications along with the entries is December 5, Das informed. The event would be an annual affair hereafter, Das announced.

Application forms and guidelines can be collected from the Orissa Modern Art Gallery located at 132, Forest Park in Bhubaneswar or from the Balasore College of Art and Craft, he informed.
