CHENNAI: The State Bank Retired and Serving Employees Forum organised a function on Tuesday to distribute gifts to meritorious students of Corporation schools.

Speaking at the function, State Bank of India Regional Manager-I, R.S. Raju, said: “The bank was helping thousands of students belonging to the weaker sections of the society.”

Around 11,000 branches of the State Bank of India had adopted underprivileged girl students and were funding their education, he said. The bank distributed gifts to 258 Corporation school students who secured 80 per cent marks in the annual examination. It would meet the expenses for stationery for the students. The gifts included wristwatches for Corporation school toppers. At least four students were adopted by every branch and the hardworking students were rewarded, said Mr. Raju. The complete support for the education of the socially, economically and educationally weaker sections of society proved that the bank had a social obligation, he said.

The higher education of the poor students who were willing to work hard would not be a problem as the bank’s intervention would help them gain access to the best institutions in the country, Mr. Raju said. B.Vinitha, who scored 493 marks in the Class IX examination, was the topper among the students adopted by the bank in the city. She is the daughter of a daily wage labourer and aspires to become a civil servant.
