Camps in colleges for issuing LL

Special Correspondent

Licences will be issued based on college ID cards

The smart card will have all details of the card-holder

BANGALORE: The Transport Department has proposed to hold camps in Bangalore colleges for issuing learner’s licences (LL) to students.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Minister for Transport R. Ashok said the department officials would be instructed to hold such camps.

The proposal was mooted following reports of large-scale corruption and delay in the issue of learner’s licences to students. Licences would be issued to students based on identity cards given by colleges. If the effort was successful, it would be extended to other cities of the State, he said.

Smart card

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa would launch smart card driving licence and vehicle registration certificate initiative here on June 25.

All the 55 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the State would issue them. The smart card project will have contact details, photograph and blood group of the card-holder.

The project would be implemented under the public-private partnership model. The cost of each smart (driving licence) would be Rs. 200 (it now costs Rs. 215). The cost of registration certificate would remain unchanged (Rs. 200).

For effective implementation of the project, a Project Monitoring Unit (PMU) had been constituted and the unit would supervise the implementation of computerisation of all the RTOs in the State.

The Minister said that with computerisation, vehicle and licence details would be available online, and the project would cut down duplication, excess paperwork, prevent forgery, and check motor vehicle theft.
