Power deficit: Centre’s assistance sought

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking assistance to overcome power deficit in the State.

Thanking the Prime Minister for granting him an opportunity to explain the serious power shortfall in Karnataka during a recent visit to New Delhi, the Chief Minister said that the present daily allocation to the State from the central stations should be raised to 1,543 MW on a par with that granted to other States. Mr. Yeddyurappa had requested the Prime Minister to direct the Union Coal Ministry to grant a captive coal block for the Kudgi project, to grant approval for the expansion of the nuclear power plant at Kaiga by adding two units of 700 MW each (1,400 MW) and to expedite the laying of a pipeline from Dabhol to Bangalore for gas-based projects.

He also called upon the Prime Minister to sanction another 765 kV station for Tumkur district.
