Bangalore: Beneficiaries of several welfare programmes launched by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) received benefits from Minister for Urban Development, Law and Parliamentary Affairs S. Suresh Kumar on Tuesday. Speaking at a programme organised by the BBMP’s West Zone to distribute certificates and receipts to beneficiaries of various welfare schemes, the Minister said the BBMP had launched several welfare measures with an intention of alleviating urban deprivation. “The civic authority’s job is not only to ensure basic amenities and develop infrastructure. It has the responsibility of helping citizens by providing them a livelihood,” he said. One of the programmes that recently launched was providing midday meal to senior citizens and the disabled. As many as 54 beneficiaries had been identified for this programme from the Rajajinagar Assembly constituency, he said. Under the self-employment scheme, the Minister distributed 19 cars to the unemployed youth. The Minister distributed scholarship and certificates to 159 women who have been trained in tailoring, knitting and embroidery, 19 women who have completed beautician course, driving licence to 28 youth and 21 youth who have received computer training. Sriram Reddy, BBMP Additional Commissioner, and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Malleswaram) M. Krishnappa were present.
