‘Anomalies in property tax assessment yet to be set right’ ‘Infrastructure work not taken up in slums where Dalits lived’ BANGALORE: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary and former Mayor M. Ramachandrappa on Wednesday demanded that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) issue khata certificates to eight lakh property owners in the areas that were brought under it. He told presspersons that the anomalies in the property tax system to be paid by owners who built unauthorised houses in the new areas were yet to be set right. This forced owners to suffer hardship in the absence of proper records. In a letter to BBMP Commissioner Bharat Lal Meena, Mr. Ramachandrappa has alleged that seven persons were killed owing to bad maintenance of storm water drains. Silt had not been removed and the low-lying areas were flooded after rains. He demanded an inquiry into it. He alleged that the asphalting work on Bellary Road, Hosur Road and other national highways were substandard and urged that all the roadworks should be completed before monsoon. Infrastructure and development work had not been undertaken in slums where a large number of Dalits lived. Huge sums earmarked for it had not been utilised, he added. Mr. Ramachandrappa urged Mr. Meena to formulate a system for coordination among various bodies such as the BBMP, BWSSB and the Bescom for providing better services to citizens. It would help avoid unnecessary digging of roads, he added. The Congress leader alleged that public toilets funded by philanthropists were improperly maintained. He alleged that the State Government was trying to delay the BBMP elections under pressure from the ministers and ruling party MLAs, who were not ready to lose the clout they enjoyed in the civic body. It was waiting for the State Election Commissioner M.R. Hegde to retire on June 20 as he was behind the pressure for holding early elections, he said.
