Guwahati: Twelve people, eight of them children, were killed when suspected militants attacked a Zeme Naga village in Assam’s troubled North Cachar Hills district on Tuesday. They also set ablaze 20 houses. N.C. Hills Deputy Commissioner S. Jagannthan told The Hindu that the bullet-riddled bodies of the victims, including two women, were recovered from the remote Misidui village, about 25 km from the district headquarters town of Haflong. With these killings, the death toll in the spate of militants’ attacks on Zeme Naga and Dimasa villages since March 18 has gone up to 47. In another incident, a suspected militant of the National Democratic Front of Boroland was killed at Fatasil in the city in the early hours. Meanwhile, Governor S.C. Mathur, who recently took over the administration of N.C. Hills following the suspension of the N.C. Hills Autonomous Council, was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital after he was taken ill. The Cabinet had recommended the suspension of the tribal council following the arrest of its chief executive member, Mohit Hojai, for alleged payment of Rs.1 crore to the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel) faction towards an arms consignment received by the militant outfit. Mr. Hojai and the arrested Social Welfare Department official R.H. Khan were remanded to 14-day judicial custody after the duo was produced in the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate.
