Relatives demand release of detenu to attend mother’s funeral

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: Traffic on the North Bypass Road was affected for about 30 minutes on Monday night as a group of people blocked the road demanding the release of a person detained under Goondas Act to attend his mother’s funeral. After Goondas Act detenue M. Athiyappan’s mother Arumugathammal was killed in a road accident, his relatives obtained a court order for his release on parole to attend the last rites. However, the Palayamkottai Central Prison authorities reportedly told them that they should also get an order from the Home Department since Athiyappan had been arrested under the Goondas Act. Protesting it, relatives of Arumugathammal blocked traffic on the road with the body around 11 p.m. on Monday.

As the police assured them of the release of Athiyappan on parole on Tuesday, the protest was withdrawn. After Athiyappan came out on parole this afternoon, the last rites were performed.
