DGP’s missive: CEO likely to seek EC’s guidance

HYDERABAD: Chief Electoral Officer I. V. Subba Rao is likely to seek the guidance of the Election Commission on the three letters addressed to him in quick succession by Director General of Police S. S. P. Yadav insisting that he spell out the reasons for shifting him from the post during the general elections.

The CEO had responded to the first two letters by sending him a copy of the transfer order issued by the Commission and explained the procedure adopted in shifting him. Not satisfied by the response, Mr. Yadav wrote another letter asking how Mr. Subba Rao had recommended that he be eased out of election duties on the basis of unfounded allegations.

Mr. Subba Rao has reportedly decided against replying to the third letter and take up the matter with the Election Commission which had ordered action against Mr. Yadav.

Sources said that unless there was a proper response to the DGP’s letters, an opinion might be created in the public mind that the CEO and the EC had erred in their action though it was aimed at ensuring a free and fair election.

The EC had ordered Mr. Yadav to be replaced by A. K. Mohanty, as DGP, after the former referred to Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy as “our CM” while addressing a police officers’ meet in Kurnool to review the preparedness for the elections.

Video clippings of the meeting where Mr. Yadav also referred to the efforts made by the Chief Minister for welfare of policemen were sent to the EC.

Moreover, the DGP undertook a visit to Singapore in the midst of the election process without informing the EC.

Meanwhile, Mr. Subba Rao did not visit his office on Tuesday as he had availed leave.

The CEO has been empanelled for promotion and is hoping to be transferred to the Centre.
