Beedi workers stage protest


Demand increased wages, distribution of pensions

‘Beedi workers working from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.’


KARIMNAGAR: Women beedi workers under the aegis of AITUC trade union have staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Monday demanding the government to increase wages, construction of model colony and distribution of pensions.

AITUC leaders led by S. Mallesham, Zahiruddin, P. Laxmi, Rama, Devamma and others participated in the dharna.

They said that beedi workers are working from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. but get wages ranging from Rs. 55 to Rs. 70 for rolling 1,000 beedies.

They demanded the government to take measures to provide a minimum wage of Rs. 100 for rolling 1,000 beedies
