Desilting of canals in Oulgaret under way

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: As per directions issued by Chief Secretary R. Chandramohan last month, Oulgaret Municipality has undertaken desilting of roadside drains in many areas.

Executive Engineer of Oulgaret Municipality M. Mourougassamy said the work was on in parts of Venkata Nagar, Rainbow Nagar, Kamaraj Nagar and Brindavanam.

Mr. Mourougassamy said that during the rainy season last year, clogged and silted roadside drains had caused floods. Desilting would ensure free flow of water and help avoid floods during the monsoons.

The 4.28 km-long main canal, 280 km of ‘L’ drains and 45 km of ‘U’ drains would be desilted.

“The desilting process for all the areas under the municipality was originally proposed to be completed within two months. But because only 27 people are involved in the work, it will take longer,” Mr. Mourougassamy said.
