Medical officers threaten stir

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Government Medical Officers Association have planned to launch a series of protests from June 22 to put forward their demands including grant of pending promotions, increase in pay for contract medical officers and hike of stipend for Diploma of National Board (DNB) postgraduates and senior residents.

According to a press release, the association said promotions to Chief Medical Officer (Non Functioning Selection Grade) cadre has been pending for about 10 years. A few doctors had retired without receiving their due promotions. The promotions to the cadre were due to 50 doctors for the last seven years, they added.

The Dynamic Assured Career Progression scheme of the Sixth Pay Commission was yet to be implemented and a demand to draft a policy to stipulate working hours pattern for doctors in the Puducherry health services has not been considered, the association pointed out.

There were around 377 medical officers and 40 contract medical officers in all four regions of the Union Territory. The association said their demands for enhanced pay for contract medical officers and specialists, increase of stipend for DNB postgraduates and cancellation of extension order for retiring specialists have not been addressed till date.

After conducting an awareness campaign to put forward their demands to the public from June 15 to 21, the association has decided to launch a series of protests from June 22 if the government did not look into their demands. The protests included a rally, sit-in protest and one day mass casual leave.
