PUDUCHERRY: Representatives of 11 castes and communities met members of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) and sought inclusion in the Central List of Other Backward Classes for the Union Territory of Puducherry, at a public hearing on Monday.

Chairperson of the Commission S. Ratnavel Pandian said the last meeting of the NCBC in Puducherry was held on August 28, 2008. “At the last public hearing, 18 castes and communities were examined and the recommendations of the commission were given to the Central government.

There are 11 castes and communities who have sought inclusion in the central list and their views will be examined at this public hearing,” he said.

He asked the representatives of the castes and communities to explain why they were seeking inclusion in the central list, and put forward grievances, if any.

He said the detailed petitions from the castes and communities should reach the commission in four weeks.

After examining the representations, the NCBC would submit recommendations to the Central government, he added. Representatives of the following castes and communities took part in the public hearing: Kanakkupillai, Marudha Naidu, Palayapattu Naidu, Vandayar, Vellala Chettiar, Gollalu, Pariyari, Kudumbi, Ezhuthachan, Ediga, Chettiar, Pattinava Chettiar and Vadabalija. There were also members of other castes.

NCBC members Ram Awadhesh Singh and Subba Somu, member-secretary Chitra Chopra, Chairperson of State level Commission for Backward Classes K. Govindarajan and Director of Social Welfare V.
