Solution to High Court Bench soon: Tharoor

Special Correspondent

Wait with patience, lawyers told

Says issue has to be taken up with new Law Minister

Promises help to set up a CBI court in the capital

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Union Minister for State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor has said he is working for a constructive solution to the demand for setting up a High Court Bench in the capital.

Addressing a “meet-the-press” programme of the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club here on Sunday, Dr. Tharoor said he had initiated steps to evolve a solution to the demand at the earliest. In the present context, the issue had to be taken up with the new Union Law Minister and others concerned. He urged the lawyers to wait with patience. Dr. Tharoor promised to look into the issue of setting up a CBI court in the capital.

Twin city

The Minister had already identified a European city as the twin city of the capital and held discussions with the Mayor. The city that had been identified was five times bigger than the capital. The twin status will pave the way for technical cooperation, development of coastal area, improving infrastructure facilities and cultural exchange. An international delegation from the city would visit the capital soon. The name of the city would be revealed only after completing the formalities, he said.

Talks with Ministers

Dr. Tharoor said he had already held discussions with 12 Ministers on various issues concerning the capital. Proposals from the State government were imperative for taking up new projects and developing the capital as an educational and research destination. It was too late to lobby for an IIT in the capital. Dr. Tharoor said he would act as a facilitator for clearing the State government’s proposals submitted to the Centre.
