BANGALORE: After Kochi, the junior badminton bandwagon will move to Bangalore for the Union Bank all India junior championship which is the third event of the BAI calendar for juniors.

The event, which is being sponsored by Union Bank and conducted by Padukone Sports Management, gets underway here with qualifying round ties on Monday (June 15) while the main draw starts on June 17 and the finals are scheduled on June 19.

The championship, that carries an overall prize money of Rs.2 lakh, has received a massive response with over 800 entries for eight events, which are being conducted in under-16 and under-19 groups for boys and girls.

The performance of the players at Bangalore will be taken into consideration by BAI for selection of Indian squads for junior Asian and World badminton championship scheduled later this year.

Prakash Padukone, the CEO of Padukone Sports Management, hailed Union Bank’s continued support to the event for the past one decade and said: “I have fond memories of my association with Union Bank, which in fact gave me my first job, way back in mid 1970s and sponsored my trip to Indonesia for training in 1976. They have been a source of great support to the game.”

C. Abraham, General Manager of Union Bank, said that his bank would continue to support the game in the country and said: “We are proud to be associated with badminton and ever since Padukone showed the path, Indian juniors have been winning laurels by following his footsteps in the game.”
