Thiruvananthapuram: Defence Minister A.K. Antony has said the United Democratic Front (UDF) will respond to the people’s mandate in the recent Lok Sabha elections by leaving no stone unturned for the overall development of the State. He was speaking at a reception accorded by the District Congress Committee (DCC) to the newly-elected MPs and Union Ministers from the State here on Sunday. Mr. Antony said the CPI(M) and the State government were also responsible for the massive victory of the UDF at the hustings. Minister of State for External Affairs and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor said he would strive to coordinate the efforts of the State and Central governments for the development of the capital. Senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran exhorted the rank and file of the party to utilise the favourable political climate to their advantage in the next elections to the local bodies. Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi called upon party activists to realise the immense responsibility handed down by the electorate and work towards progress in all spheres. Addressing the gathering, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala thanked the people of the State for the UDF victory. DCC president V.S. Sivakumar thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi for selecting an MP from the capital city to join the Union government. Earlier, the Union Ministers and MPs had breakfast at the DCC office. Party activists were in an upbeat mood. Minister of State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas and MPs N. Peethambara Kurup, M.I. Shanavas, Kodikunnil Suresh, K. Sudhakaran, P.T. Thomas and Anto Antony, deputy leader of the Opposition G. Karthikeyan and KPCC leaders Thalekunnil Basher, K.C. Rajan, Benny Behnan, Vijayan Thomas, Solomon Alex, P. Sankaran and M.A. Kuttappan and MLAs Varkala Kahar, N. Sakthan, M.A. Vahid and George Mercier were present along with DCC presidents.
