Call to implement policy for the elderly

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Senior Citizens Friends Welfare Association has urged the government to speed up the implementation of the Policy on the Elderly.

In a memorandum that was submitted to Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy, general secretary of the association Amaravila Ramakrishnan Nair demanded seat reservation and concessional fares for senior citizens in public transport vehicles.

The association appealed to the government to earmark funds to provide medical assistance for the elderly and ensure treatment at concessional rates in private hospitals.

Other demands

Other demands raised by the association include geriatric wards in district and taluk hospitals, a relief fund for ailing senior citizens, mobile medical units attached to Primary Health Centres and day care units and homes for the elderly in panchayats.

It urged the Minister to issue identity cards for senior citizens and provide separate facilities for them in banks, treasuries and important offices.

Pension scheme

The association also called for introducing a pension scheme for senior citizens and a separate department for the welfare of the elderly.
