NEW DELHI: The Delhi Health Department is finally breathing easy with the mother-son duo, who tested positive for A (H1N1) flu this past week and had to be forcibly quarantined and treated by invoking the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1879, on Saturday, testing negative for the flu. “The 35-year-old man who arrived in Delhi from New York on June 2 and his mother, whom he subsequently infected, have been successfully treated and their test reports have come out negative. Doctors at the hospital have assured us that the two are now non-infectious and are not a health hazard to any member of the general public. We have also been keeping a check on their relatives and those persons who have come in contact with the two and so far all have tested negative for the flu,” said Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia. Reassuring the people that the State Health department was well prepared, Prof. Walia said: “We have cases being picked up at the airport and being successfully transferred and treated at city hospitals and we are satisfied with the progress we are making. We have our stock of medicines and trained doctors to handle any situation. We, however, are appealing to the general public to immediately report any case of flu- like symptoms and to stay away from self-medication. With proper treatment, which is provided free of cost, people can get completely cured of the flu.” The Capital has meanwhile reported no fresh positive case of flu and the total number has remained stagnant at five for the past 48 hours. Two more persons who had come to Delhi from Germany and Singapore on Saturday have been brought to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia hospital with symptoms of A (H1N1) flu. They were detected at the city airport and escorted to the hospital, where their samples were taken and sent for testing. “This is good news as we have had no fresh positive case of the flu and those previously admitted to various Delhi hospitals with symptoms of the flu have so far tested negative. The city has reported five cases of flu so far of which two have been successfully treated. We have established a well-connected network of medical staff in the city to ensure that persons with symptoms of the flu are attended to immediately and samples are collected with minimal risk to the general public,” said Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) J. P. Singh. Previous reports
