Body recovered from Kali river

Correspondent

Officials waiting for family to confirm if it is the missing scientist

Karwar: A body, believed to be that of the missing scientist L. Mahalingam, was recovered on Saturday night from the Kali river behind the Nisarga guest house of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited at Mallapur Township.

Police officials were not available to confirm the report. The Deputy Commissioner of Uttar Kannada Chennappa Gowda said that in all probability it was the body of the scientist. It could be confirmed only after the family identified the body.

(A PTI report, quoting the police, said the Kaiga nuclear power plant authorities identified the body as that of Mr. Mahalingam. It said his family members also confirmed that the body belonged to the scientist.)

Officials of the State intelligence said police identified the ring and the clothes of the scientist. They said it was difficult to say whether it was murder or suicide. It would be confirmed only after post-mortem examination.

A massive manhunt was launched on Saturday to locate the missing scientist of the NPCIL.

A joint combing operation was launched by the police and CISF teams in cooperation with Navy, forest and NPCIL authorities in the dense forests of Kaiga and Mallapur and the Kali river.

With mounting pressure from the government and the media, the Uttar Kannada district administration roped in diving experts of the Navy. Divers of the seabird naval base in Karwar were brought to Kali dam at Kadra on Saturday morning.

After the naval staff complained that the water level was low, police asked the Karnataka Power Corporation authorities to release water into the river.
