Residents of six villages in Cumbum block get benefits at their doorstep

Staff Reporter

THENI: Residents of six villages in Cumbum block received benefits of various welfare schemes at their doorstep in a two-day camp that concluded on Friday.

Collector P. Muthuveeran, along with officials concerned, distributed the benefits under ‘Makkalai Naadi Maavatta Nirvagam’ scheme. Healthcare too reached their doorstep. The beneficiary villages were Kamayagoundanpatti, Narayanathevanpatti, Karunakkamuthanpatti, Kullappagoundanpatti and Angoorpalayam and Surulipatti town panchayat.

Ambling down the streets of these villages, the Collector also held brief interaction with the residents at their houses. This took the villagers by surprise and also helped the Collector to come to grips with the problems faced by them.

Poor quality of drinking water, lack of adequate streetlights and poor condition of roads were some common problems of these villages and non-distribution of colour television sets, old age pension and ration cards was the major personal grievance.

When people said there was no burial ground at Surulipatti, Mr. Muthuveeran ordered officials to take immediate steps to establish one. The burial ground should look like a garden, he said. “Development works at a cost of Rs.6.56 crore had been implemented in six villages so far,” he said.

Expressing concern over a complaint of prevalence of twin- tumbler system in some pockets in the Cumbum valley, he assured to take up the matter seriously. “All are equal and no one should be ill treated,” he said.

Mr. Muthuveeran also issued orders on the spot to bifurcate a ration shop at Karunakkamuthanpatti for the convenience of card holders.

A total of 5,216 petitions were received by the Collector during his two-day camp in these villages. After an overnight verification of petitions, officials chose 2,356 petitions for distribution of welfare assistance.
