Safe water to be provided to tanda
Special Correspondent
GULBARGA: Chief Executive Officer of the Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat Anbukumar said on Saturday that the alternatives the authorities had before them to overcome the problem of high arsenic content in drinking water at Kiradalli Tanda were tapping surface water source or taking up a multiple village drinking water scheme and shifting the tanda to a safe place. “The district administration will discuss the issue with the people of the tanda and take a decision soon. Steps will be taken to provide safe drinking water to them at the earliest,” he told The Hindu.
Directions had been issued to check the health of milch animals at Kiradalli Tanda and neighbouring villages and send the milk samples for laboratory tests, he said.
Mr. Anbukumar said that the alternative drinking water source should be at least 20 km away from the present sources at the tanda. The zilla panchayat’s engineering division had been asked to work out a drinking water scheme for the tanda. “We will bring the issue to the notice of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa during his visit to Gulbarga on June 19 and seek special assistance to take up a water project for the tanda,” he added.
He said directions had been issued to the zilla panchayat and the Mines and Geology Department to take steps to test water from various sources in Shahapur and Surpur taluks.
