KOCHI: The Cochin Film Society came into existence by screening the classic Battleship Potemkin by Russian master filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein in 1984. Twenty-five years later, the society is marking its anniversary with a festival of contemporary Russian films. It has come a long way, since then. The festival, being organised in association with the Russian Culture Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, State Information and Public Relations Department and the Kochi Corporation, will begin at EMS Memorial Town Hall on June 22, with the screening of the film Papa. The next day will have the film The 9th Company based on the true story of the Russian troops that moved into Afghanistan in the 1980s.The festival will end on June 26 with the screening of The Vanished Empire.The screenings will begin on all days at 6 p.m., except on the inaugural day. The inaugural ceremony will begin at 5.30 p.m.
