Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday directed the Director of the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management, Kozhikode, to study about the safety of the bathing ghats in rivers in the State. The Bench comprising Chief Justice B.R. Bannurmath and Justice Kurian Joseph gave the directive while hearing a writ petition filed by Jibu P. Thomas of Piravam. The petition sought a directive to the State government to issue proper guidelines regarding excursions being conducted by schools in the State. The petition was filed in the wake of the boat tragedy at Thattekkad on February 20, 2007. As many as 15 students and three teachers were killed in the accident. The court also ordered the director to file a report within two months. Appeal dismissedThe Bench also dismissed a writ appeal filed by Ajitha Suresh and V.V. Varghese, Chairperson and Vice-chairperson respectively of the Adoor Municipality, against a single judge verdict upholding their disqualification as councillors. They were disqualified on the ground of defecting from the Congress and voting in favour of a non-confidence motion moved against the then Chairperson and the Vice-Chairperson. Law and order issueJustice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan on Friday directed the Wayanad Superintendent of Police to investigate and file a report as to why unruly incidents took place at the Poothadi Grama Panchayat, when a no-confidence against the president was taken up for discussion. The court noted that the law and order problem had arisen despite the warning given by the police. V.N. Saseendran, vice-president, was allegedly abducted a few days before the Left Democratic Front-ruled panchayat was to take up a no-confidence motion against the president. He was produced before the High Court following a directive given on a habeas corpus petition filed by his wife.
