VS inaugurates Kerala State Housing Board scheme

Title deeds to be returned to beneficiaries

Scheme to see a waiver of

Rs.183 crore

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Thursday inaugurated a State-level scheme to write off housing loans of those belonging to the economically weaker sections of society.

The scheme launched by the Kerala State Housing Board (KSHB) coincides with the third anniversary of the Left Democratic Front government in the State. Nearly 41,500 people will benefit from the scheme which will see a waiver of Rs.183 crore, KSHB sources said.

“All title deeds and other related documents collected as security will be returned to the beneficiaries,” Minister for Housing Benoy Viswom, who presided over the function, said.

The scheme will benefit 2,168 people from Thiruvananthapuram. The scheme is a result of the efforts of the government in the last two years, Mr. Viswom said.

Inaugurating the scheme, Mr. Achuthanandan handed over title deeds and other documents to Ahmed Pillai, a resident of Vallakkadavu. The Chief Minister called upon KSHB officials to complete the scheme in a time-bound manner.

Listing the achievements of his government, Mr. Achuthanandan said Rs.1,300 crore had been set apart to achieve self-sufficiency in agriculture and dairy development. “While over 7,000 farmers committed suicide died in Andhra Pradesh in the last five years, it was close to ‘no case’ in Kerala,” he said.

KSHB chairman M. Rehamatullah said the board had provided constructed houses or provided financial aid to around 6.5 lakh persons in the last 37 years. Nearly 90 per cent of all housing schemes were designed to benefit the poor, he said.

The inaugural function was attended by Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran and district panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan.
