THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two schools have been selected for the Vanamithra Award for 2009. Forest Minister Benoy Viswom told reporters here on Thursday that St. Antony’s Upper Primary School at Kottathara in Wayanad district and Naripatta Upper Primary School at Kallachi in Kozhikode district were selected for the award. The schools would share the prize money, Rs.1 lakh. Five schools won the Vanamithra consolation prizes for Rs.10,000 each. The winners are Government Higher Secondary School, Mogral Puthoor, Kasaragod; Assumption High School, Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad; St. Antony’s Higher Secondary School, Plashanal, Kottayam; Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School, Kozhikode, and M.E.S. College, Nedungandam, Idukki. A committee headed by Principal Secretary (Forest), and comprising Principal Chief Forest Conservator, Additional Principal Chief Forest Conservator (Social Forestry), Collegiate Education Director, Directorate of Public Instruction, Kerala Forest Research Institute Director, B. Sugathakumari and Prof. Shobeendran as members selected the winners from 54 applicants. The winners were selected from the educational institutions which participated actively in the ‘Ente Maram’ and ‘Nammude Maram’ projects. Implementation of the project, consistency in follow-up, interventions of the educational institutions, and the interest taken by the students in brining up the plants were the yardstick for the selection. The role played by the educational institutions in creating awareness among the students of the need for conserving forests and trees was also considered for selecting the winners.
