Strategy for modernisations

to be suggested

Thiruvananthapuram: A joint team of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Chennai, and the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM), Kozhikode, will carry out scientific studies for improving the efficiency of the Thanneermukkom bund and the Thottappally Spillway under the Kuttanad Package.

The study team will be led by B.S. Murthy, Professor at the IIT, and CWRDM Executive Director K.V. Jayakumar. The study will be completed within 18 months.

A memorandum of understanding for the study was signed here on Thursday by Additional Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar and Prof. Murthy.

The team would suggest a strategy for modernisation of the bund to manage salinity and minimise ecological decay and for improving the efficiency of the spillway and leading canals.

In a statement here, the CWRDM said the study would focus on the salinity distributions in the Vembanad water system under different management situations.

It would evolve a plan for improving the performance of the bund to control salinity and improve agricultural production in the Kuttanad region and that of the spillway scheme for diversion of combined floodwaters of the Achencoil, Pampa and Manimala rivers. As far as the spillway was concerned, the team would evolve a plan for improving the scheme to minimise the flood damage in the Kuttanad region.
