THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The speed of the winds blowing east from the sea has dropped a few notches and the monsoon cloud cover has dissipated a bit, promising a day of relative brightness for the State on Tuesday after two-three days of evenly spread intense rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday, however, said that there would be “rain and thundershowers at a few places” in the State on Tuesday. Weather models
The IMD’s numerical weather models suggested the likelihood of subdued monsoon activity for the time being, followed by an increase in rainfall from Wednesday. An offshore trough — a channel of sudden drop in atmospheric pressure — extending from the Karnataka coast to the Kerala coast was visible on the IMD’s mean sea level pressure chart for the day. This is an ideal condition for good rainfall, according to meteorologists. The evolving short lull in rainfall coincides with the weakening of Sunday’s low pressure system over the northeast Bay of Bengal, which had been pulling the rain clouds across the peninsula from the west. Enamackal in Thrissur district recorded the highest rainfall of 10 cm during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Thrissur and Vellanikara (9 cm each) and CIL Kochi (7 cm) also recorded heavy rainfall. Several places in the districts of Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram received good rainfall of 2 cm and more during 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday.
