Character portrayal a challenge: Priyanka

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Portraying the character of Sahira in Vilapangalkappuram was a real challenge, said Priyanka, who won the State film award for the best female actor.

Addressing a meet-the-press programme here on Monday, Ms. Pryianka said the transformation of an artiste into a character was the real challenge. T.V. Chandran, who directed the award-winning film, had given a detailed description about the character, but said that even he was not aware of her state of mind. Mr. Chandran said a clear picture of the character would evolve only after completing the film. He asked Priyanka to transform the character, even to the minute detail, so as to make its depiction honest and straight. She was virtually living as Sahira till the work was completed.

Similarly, the character in Bhoomi Malayalam, again a film directed by Mr. Chandran, had Priyanka as Annie Joseph, someone who reacts sharply to situations in life. She has set certain standards for selecting characters. “I will first assess the characters as an ordinary spectator, weigh its possibilities and then accept them,” she said.

Brought up in a conservative family, she does not yearn to do roles that go against the standards set by her. Cinema, serial or drama do not make much difference to her. “Since I am an artiste, the medium does not matter to me. I give maximum importance to portray the roles in a flawless manner,” she said.

Already she has acted in nine films in Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada. A number of projects are in the pipeline. To her, Malayalam cinema appeared to be more friendly and comfortable than other languages. She attributed her success in the career and the award to Mr. Chandran who gave valuable guidance while acting in his films.
