KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Thursday adjourned to next week the hearing on a writ petition seeking to rehabilitate migrant workers living at Manappattiparambu in the city. The hearing on the petition was deferred by Chief Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice Kurian Joseph. No facilitiesAccording to the petitioner, Rajan Kudumbathil, around 100 huts had been put up by the migrant workers. There was a move to evict them from the ground. The authorities had not provided any facilities for these migrant workers who were living in inhuman conditions. They were often subject to various kinds of attacks and torture. The petitioners alleged that the workers were being exploited by the contractors as well. The petitioner pointed out that the authorities were bound to provide basic facilities as contemplated under the Inter-state Migrant Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act. In fact, the migrant workers were really victims of development projects. The politicians or the government did not show any interest in their welfare, the petitioner said. The petition sought a directive to the State Government to take a count of migrant labourers in various parts of the State and prepare a comprehensive scheme for their rehabilitation and welfare. It also sought to implement the provisions of the law on migrant workers.
