KOCHI: High Court Judge Justice Kurian Joseph has stressed the need for educating consumers in using electricity judiciously. He was inaugurating a symposium on protection of consumers’ interests in the power sector, organised by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission here on Saturday. Mr. Joseph said that the Kerala State Electricity Board had not been able to curtail power theft. “Not a single person has been punished for power theft as yet,” he said. If consumers were educated about their rights and obligations, power thefts could be stopped. The judge advocated private participation in power generation. Karpaga Vinayagam, Chairperson, Appellate Tribunal for Electricity, said that the public did not approach the grievances redressal forums because they were ineffective. “The forums should consist of people independent of the electricity board. Only then will they render justice effectively,” he said.
